Intramuros: A Cultural Heritage Tour

Metro Manila is the urban capital of the Philippines. Comprised of several bustling cities, it is the country’s bastion of modernity and cosmopolitan appeal. Manila is the premier gateway to any destination in the country. It serves its own menu of attractions and activities. Located in the heart of Manila, the old historical town of Intramuros or the “walled city” is the best place to view Spanish colonial architecture that was built in 1571. It is one of the best preserved medieval cities in the world.

Harbour Square

One of Manila’s newest hotspots, Harbour Square, is located inside the CCP Complex adjacent to the Cultural Center of the Philippines. It houses numerous modern restaurants and establishments as well as a night market for those who want to go shopping or experience a sunset cocktail cruise. Rizal Park is named after the national hero of the country, Dr. Jose Rizal. Formerly Bagumbayan, this is where Dr. Rizal was executed in 1898. His remains lie under the memorial statue, with ceremonial soldiers guarding the site.

The Light and Sound Museum

This special attraction inside the walls showcases the rich history of the Philippines and of Intramuros. With its life-sized dioramas, it relives the story of pre-historic encounters, from Spanish colonization, conversion to Christianity and spark of the revolution to gaining the independence that shaped the country to what it is today.

Fort Santiago

This historic fort is part of the structure of the walled city. It is where Jose Rizal, the country’s national hero, was detained before his execution. The former fortress houses several memorabilia of the 300-year Spanish rule in the Philippines.

San Agustin Church & Museum

Built in 1571, it is the oldest stone church in the Philippines. It houses a private museum of rare and ancient religious artifacts and is the site of a centuries-old crypt that houses the mausoleum of Spanish conquistador, Miguel Lopez de Legaspi. It is one of the five Philippine baroque churches inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Manila Cathedral

With its intricate stone carvings, stained glass mosaics and rosette windows, the Manila Cathedral is a favorite venue for grand weddings. The seat of the Archdiocese of Manila, the church looks like a giant cross when viewed from the air.

Dining at Barbara’s Restaurant

A 19th century establishment in a Spanish setting that specializes in Spanish and native dishes, Barbara’s is where tourists can enjoy a romantic serenade by talented Filipino singers from Monday to Friday amidst an old world charm.

Shopping at Mananzan Handicrafts

From the intricate wood carvings of the North to the charming shell products of the South, this shop carries an extremely wide selection of Philippine made products masterfully crafted from native raw materials such as acacia, coconut wood, raffia, pineapple fibers and shells.

Take a step back in time as you discover the charms of Manila.
