The Philippine jeepney is a product of Filipino ingenuity in the midst of limited financial resources. The idea for the vehicle was derived from the G.I. jeeps left by the American soldiers after World War II. It has the powerful engine of an army jeep, but with a remodeled body that has been topped with a metal roof, painted with vibrant colors, and decorated with bright chrome hood ornaments. The size has been altered too, so that it can now accommodate between 20 to 30 commuting passengers.
Over the years, the jeepney has emerged as a popular and creative means of transportation in the Philippines. Tagged as the “King of the Road”, it has become an enduring symbol of Philippine pop culture.
